‘’It was a heavy race today. I saw great teamwork. Too bad there were some unlucky moments, but that’s cycling.’’ – Coach Marieke van Wanroij
The team performed strong in this season’s first spring classic. At the start of Omloop het Nieuwsblad The Parkhotel Team was represented by Lorena Wiebes, Femke Markus, Romy Kasper, Esther van Veen, Nina Buysman and Belle de Gast. Unfortunately, Anouska Koster wasn’t part of the line-up due to not being fit last week.
Femke Markus was part of the first serious breakaway of the race. Together with Christina Schweinberger and Maaike Boogaard they made it to the first cobbled section of the day before the peloton caught up with them.
The biggest shift happened on the Molenberg, where the 22 strongest riders including Lorena Wiebes separated themselves from the peloton. The race wasn’t decided until the ultimate climb of the day, De Muur van Geraardsbergen. Annemiek van Vleuten made an attack and tore the group of leaders apart. With only the Bosberg climb to go, the chasing groups weren’t strong enough to get back to van Vleuten. Lorena was the first to finish for Team Parkhotel Valkenburg at place 22, followed by Femke Markus (49), Romy Kasper (56), Esther van Veen (59) and Nina Buysman (71).
